Glasgow's Three Best Neighbourhoods: West End, Southside, East End

Glasgow is a city of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character, and getting to know them is the best way to understand the place. The compact city centre and the wider districts are well connected by the Subway, trains and buses, so it is easy to move between them.

The West End is the city's bohemian quarter, centred on Byres Road and the University of Glasgow. Nearby Finnieston has become one of Glasgow's most talked-about food and drink strips, while Kelvingrove Park and the Botanic Gardens provide green space. In the centre, the Merchant City is a grid of restored warehouses now filled with bars, restaurants and boutiques, while Partick and Govan, on either side of the Clyde, retain a strong sense of local identity and are linked by the Govan-Partick pedestrian bridge. Each district can be explored on foot, and the Subway's circular line connects many of them directly.

Getting to know these areas is also the best way to eat and shop like a local, as each neighbourhood has its own high streets, markets and independent businesses. Whether you are drawn to the cafes of the West End, the diverse food of the Southside or the nightlife of the East End, Glasgow's neighbourhoods reward those who take the time to explore beyond the city centre.
