Celtic hold a seven-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership after rounding off the week with a 2-1 win at Parkhead on Wednesday evening, their fourth consecutive victory since the summer programme resumed following pre-season. The result lifts them to 67 points from 31 games and puts Rangers, who drew 1-1 at Ibrox against Dundee United on Tuesday, firmly on the back foot with six fixtures remaining in the truncated schedule before the league splits in August.
The timing matters. Both clubs are deep into pre-season recruitment for 2026-27, with transfer windows and squad assessments running in parallel to competitive action. A gap of seven points at this stage of the calendar is the kind of cushion that shapes the entire summer narrative — including sponsorship conversations, European seeding and the morale heading into pre-season tours. Every result between now and the split carries weight far beyond three points.
Celtic Park on Wednesday had an announced attendance of 58,400, near capacity, and the atmosphere around Kerryhead Street and London Road reflected it. Supporters were still filling the pubs on Gallowgate well past 10pm. Across the city, rangers fans gathered at Ibrox and the surrounding Govan bars — a more subdued midweek night, with the dropped points against Dundee United prompting the kind of post-match dissection that carries into weekend training reports.
Elsewhere in the city, Queen's Park had a sharp 3-0 home win at Hampden Park against Partick Thistle on Saturday, June 28, in the Championship. It was Queen's Park's biggest margin of victory since February, and it edges them to within four points of the promotion play-off places. Partick, based at the Westerfield Community Campus in Maryhill since their temporary relocation arrangement, now sit uncomfortably in mid-table with manager Kris Doolan facing questions about a forward line that has managed only nine goals since April.
The Glasgow Club — the City Council's network of 29 leisure facilities including Scotstoun Leisure Centre and Tollcross International Swimming Centre — also reported a 14 percent rise in junior football registrations this month compared with July 2025, a figure the council's sport development office attributed partly to the ongoing community outreach tied to Scotland's Euro 2028 host-city preparations.
Athletics caught attention at Scotstoun Stadium on Thursday when three Scottish under-23 athletes posted personal bests at the West District Athletics Championships. The 400 metres and 800 metres events drew clubs from across Lanarkshire and the west of Scotland, with Shettleston Harriers — founded in 1904 and one of Glasgow's oldest running clubs — taking the team prize on aggregate points for the second year running.
At the Emirates Arena in Parkhead, the Glasgow Rocks basketball team opened their pre-season schedule with a 94-81 win over a combined BBL development squad on Sunday, June 29. Head coach Gareth Murray rotated 11 players through the starting five across four quarters, a clear signal that squad depth is being tested ahead of the British Basketball League season opener scheduled for late September. Season tickets for the 2026-27 campaign are currently priced from £149 for adults and £79 for concessions, with early-bird pricing running until July 18.
Next week brings a fixture pile-up. Celtic travel to Aberdeen on Saturday July 5 while Rangers host Motherwell at Ibrox the same afternoon — a results day that could either cement the gap at the top or start closing it. Queen's Park face a difficult away trip to Ayr United on Friday evening. The West District Athletics Championships continue at Scotstoun on Saturday morning from 10am, open to spectators free of charge. And the Glasgow Club is running its summer holiday football camps at Tollcross from July 7, with places still available online for children aged six to 14.
