Glasgow Secondary Schools Train Athletes at City Venues Daily

Secondary schools in Glasgow field athletes who compete at national level and earn places on Scottish representative teams in athletics, hockey and rugby.

These programs operate against a backdrop of venue upgrades that affect training and competition access for school squads. The timing coincides with preparations for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and recent public investment in pitches and courts.

Scotstoun Stadium Works

Work has started on Scotstoun Stadium to remove the existing athletics track and lay a new surface by September. The project forms part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and will alter the main venue used by several city schools for track events.

Victoria Park and Community Pitches

Refurbished basketball and netball courts at Victoria Park reopened in June 2026 under Glasgow Life management, with changes aimed at better accessibility. Separate funding of more than £370,000 went to community pitches in Govan and Castlemilk, including £298,597 for synthetic grass replacement at Barlia Sports Complex.

High School of Glasgow and The Glasgow Academy squads already take part in Scottish Schools Championships. The new or improved surfaces give those teams additional options for training sessions and matches during the school year.

Three indoor padel courts also opened at Glasgow Club Scotstoun in April 2026. While not a core high school sport, the addition expands the range of indoor facilities available to secondary students outside peak team schedules.
