Glasgow Residents Unite Through Community Fitness Challenges in Parks
Group exercise events in Glasgow parks and streets are drawing residents into shared workouts that build connections across neighbourhoods.
How we reported this

More than 400 residents completed a 5-kilometre relay challenge through Kelvingrove Park on 4 July, with teams swapping baton markers every 500 metres along the main paths.
The timing aligns with longer daylight hours and Glasgow Life's summer schedule that added 12 new outdoor slots since May. Residents cite the chance to meet neighbours as a main draw, especially after indoor gym numbers dipped during last winter's wet months.
West End sessions now run every Saturday at 9am from the park's south gate near Sauchiehall Street, while a separate circuit programme operates on Tuesday evenings at Glasgow Green beside the People's Palace. Both use free bodyweight stations supplied by the city council and attract mixed-age groups from nearby tenements.
West End and Southside routes expand
Trainers from the local Parkrun network coordinate the Kelvingrove event, marking routes that loop past the art gallery and the River Kelvin footbridge. In the Southside, the Glasgow Green circuit finishes near the Saltmarket junction, where participants cool down on benches facing the Clyde. These fixed locations let regulars car-share or walk from nearby postcodes such as G3 and G40.
City records show group fitness participation climbed 22 percent between 2024 and 2025, with average weekly attendance at the two parks reaching 1,150 people. Entry remains £6 for adults and free for under-16s when booked through the Glasgow Life app at least 48 hours ahead.
Next steps for residents
Anyone can sign up for the next Kelvingrove relay on 11 July via the same app or by turning up at the south gate with a water bottle and trainers. Newcomers receive a printed route card at the start line and are paired with a group of four for the relay segments. Regulars advise arriving 15 minutes early to stretch on the grass near the bandstand.
